OUT OF BOX EXPERIENCE
The Trash Can was well packaged by the manufacturer to protect against damage, the unpacking process was straightforward, and only slightly awkward due to the size of the item (pretty much unavoidable). The free 'starter' liners are a welcome addition.

CRAFTSMANSHIP, FIT & FINISH and MATERIALS
I own four of these cans (to be more specific, I own two of the prior generation NON fingerprint-proof cans, and two of the improved fingerprint-proof versions). Since they are mechanically identical I will include experiences and impressions from both generations.

This is an exquisitely engineered and assembled item. Materials are well chosen, with plenty of real metal, and premium plastics that feel sturdy and feature attractive finishes that are pleasant to touch. The older two have been in use in a busy household for nearly five years and look and work like the day I bought them. The fingerprint-proof versions are mechanically identical, but feature an improved finish that resists streaks and prints.

COST & VALUE
This is probably the most expensive trash can I have ever purchased, but it is also the best made, longest lasting and most mechanically impressive. If you can bring yourself to pay the asking price, it represents a great value over the long term and I think you'll find that it's money well spent.

USING THE DEVICE
As with other step cans, a press of the foot pedal opens the lid. The butterfly lid design is ingenious and allows you to place the can in areas where a one-piece lid design would require too much clearance. It also looks really cool. This is my first foray into higher end garbage receptacles. I have always had cheap white plastic cans. We bought a house recently and are upgrading the kitchen appliances to stainless steel so i wanted a garbage can for our recyclables to look nice next to our stainless refrigerator. This is perfect! It looks chic- I can't believe I'm using this word for a garbage can! but it is really nice and sleek; it's narrow in the front and very deep. We have a small space between our fridge and a door so this works perfectly. It fits a 13 gallon bag just right and the liner fits it so well, you don't see the bag when the lid is closed. It holds a lot- really maximizes the 13 gallon bag. The lid is amazing! It opens in the middle and closes slowly, silently.... like a James Bond movie prop. I choose a manual step model since I read about a lot of problems with the automatic sensor models- they broke or were always opening because of pets; we have a cute and active dog. I am in no way inconvenienced by having to step on the floor petal when I want it opened. I never thought I could love a garbage can, but this is so cool and so chic! I couldn't be happier~ about a garbage can! who knew? Even my husband was impressed by it. I would rate it higher if I could.

This trash can is AWESOME! We had ours for 10 YEARS before just now replacing. Love the quiet shut. Love that kids can't get into it. Probably 5 years in the quiet shut function died, but we still kept it for all the other pluses. People said they couldn't find bags that fit. We buy our bags at Costco- they work GREAT. I don't think you'll ever regret spending the money on this, and I'm cheap! Finally replacing because we had a mouse problem, and there was a smell to it. Figured we got 10 years out of it so we might as well get a new one that's quiet again (even though we could have just cleaned out the inside. We buy ours at bed bath and beyond though because you can use a 20% off coupon there and get a slightly better deal ;)

My clever labrador retriever puppy had discovered how to open the lid of my previous trash can so I needed a solution and fast before she learned how to knock everything over! This trash can is perfect. It is a rare occassion that she even notices that it is there. Regular 13 gallon trash bags fit this container, don't worry about purchasing special bags. I was hesitant at first due to the price but have since decided that it was worth every penny!!!

I've looked at dozens of trashcans, including other Simple Human models. It fits a standard 13 gallon trash bag better than all others. This means less trips to dump the trash. There is an airhole at the bottom of the tashcan, which means no suction when you pull your bag out, so removing trash is easier. Also, my bags are from Costco and are better than the more expensive Simple Human brand's. You can disable the top flappers if needed, to leave the top open while you shuck corn or do other things that require an open top trashcan. It really is fingerprint free. The top butterfly flappers do not slap the adjacent wall when opened, unlike the other simple human trash can I tried which had only one part to its lid. The opening mechanisms are metal, unlike the Target stainless steel trashcan with some plastic parts that I previously owned. The plastic parts broke on that trashcan after a few years of use. This Simple Human trashcan has a 10 year warranty. Lastly, the trashcan is heavy. It will not migrate with use, since it is non skid and heafty. So, skip the complicated models with motion sensors, and get this one!
